How to Plan a Security Upgrade Project

Increasing ballistic security is no longer as simple as determining the right level of bulletproof glass and finding someone to install it. Modern security upgrade projects are complex; taking a systematic approach when planning a security upgrade project will help you avoid pitfalls and protect what matters most.

How to Plan a Security Upgrade Project in Five Steps

We manufacture six main styles of bullet-resistant transaction windows. All of these styles are customizable based on your unique needs. Reception areas are some of the most common areas that require bulletproof transaction window protection, in addition to the ER and hospital pharmacy. With the right style, each area will be secure and the barrier will blend in with its surroundings.

Step 1: Get a Security Assessment

Setting a security project timeline begins with determining what needs to be done. A physical security risk assessment will help you identify your risks and find opportunities to increase safety. Although there are many self-assessment tools and checklists, it's usually best to seek a fresh set of eyes for your security assessment.

In many cases—for example with schools, houses of worship, and many non-profits—local law enforcement agencies can help you with a no-cost security assessment and walkthrough. Even in these cases, you may prefer to hire an accredited security integrator or specialist familiar with the unique challenges your building, business, or organization may face.

Your security assessment will highlight problem areas and opportunities. It's rarely a complete prescription for addressing those issues.

Step 2: Design Your Security Upgrades

Once you understand your facility’s problem areas and opportunities, you’re ready to design your security upgrades, including any ballistic barriers. If you choose TSS as your bulletproof barrier provider, your team will collaborate with our engineers to create a customized solution that protects your people and blends in with your building’s aesthetics. We’ll take the time to understand how your team works in the space to make sure you have everything you need to be protected, including package passers, deal trays, voice ports, and other accessories.

Step 3: Set a Budget and Get Quotes

Many contractors and architects underestimate the cost of bullet-resistant materials. The best way to get an understanding of your project’s costs is to speak with your ballistic barrier provider directly. When you work with TSS to design a system, we’ll give you the cost of your improvements when we design your bulletproof system.

If this is your first time considering ballistic security upgrades, the sheer number of changes may feel overwhelming. You don’t have to implement everything all at once, especially if you have a limited annual budget or are depending on security grants to fund improvements. We often encourage organizations to start in the most important areas and add a few bullet-resistant elements every year until their project is complete.

Step 4: Educate Your Team on Using the Security Upgrades

Your new security upgrades will impact everyone in the building and every stakeholder in your organization. Make sure they understand what changes are being made and how to use the system correctly, even if it takes more time. Bulletproof barriers in particular often require workers to adjust to a new way of working. Failing to educate your team on the reason behind the barrier and the knowledge of how to use it correctly puts everyone at risk.

A security solution only works if everyone can get behind it. The greatest enemy of a $10,000 access control system and bullet-resistant door is a 99-cent rubber doorstop.

Step 5: Schedule Your System Installation

Once your system has been fabricated, it’s time to schedule the installation. When you work with Total Security Solutions, we typically install a bulletproof barrier system overnight, with no break in business. Even large retrofit projects can usually be completed over the course of a single weekend so we don’t disrupt your normal hours of operation.

A Proven Process for Implementing Security Upgrade Projects

TSS has developed a four-step proven process for creating a complete physical security solution. This process has been refined over the course of decades spent creating bullet resistant barriers systems and solutions.

1. Assess

Our team will use the results of your security assessment to determine the style of bulletproof barrier you’ll need, UL level of protection, and other details.

2. Plan

Thorough project planning and management allows us to outline the project expectations, define the timeline, and connect you with your project manager who will be your point of contact throughout the process.

Approve

If something isn't quite right in the plan, we’ll go back to the assessment and adjust the plan accordingly. Nothing ever moves forward before you are 100% comfortable and confident that the plan is exactly what you’re looking for.

3. Produce

TSS handles all phases of production in-house, with specialized craftsmen handling every aspect of your project.

4. Deliver and Install

Once your project is ready to ship, TSS' trained team can help you identify local installers, or our expert team of installation specialists can handle the job! Our skilled crew can have a system in place overnight and leave the area clean and ready for business in the morning.
