The Healing Center of San Diego, a pain management facility, needed a bulletproof barrier system that would marry its high-end professional setting with local officials' security recommendations.
Medical and recreational marijuana dispensaries pose special security and access control challenges. Large quantities of valuable products are on hand, while these facilities must also comply with special regulatory requirements with regard to security. The Healing Center needed better access control and clear site lines. They also sought to provide a high-end, professional setting for patients while still meeting security standards set out by the sheriff's department.
When asked for recommendations, local law enforcement consultants suggested that The Healing Center install a Level 3 bullet-resistant barrier system, commonly found in police stations, government offices, and courthouses. Most retailers do not need that level of protection, opting for a Level 1 system, which is rated to stop multiple shots from handguns commonly used in armed robberies.
Our security experts knew that a Level 3 system would not be a good fit for this particular setting. Plus, the added expense of fabricating and installing a Level 3 system would quickly exceed the project budget. We were able to communicate our concerns with the architect, business owner, and sheriff's deputies, coordinating approvals and paperwork so the project could continue smoothly.
The design called for a light, airy feel without sacrificing security, posing a challenge because of The Healing Center's smaller footprint. TSS worked with Element Construction to implement a system with bulletproof acrylic glazing, framing, and bulletproof doors for multiple control points.
TSS custom fabricated all components in our Michigan facility. Many bulletproof components are difficult to modify in the field, so we custom-cut the glazing to fit perfectly in the intended space and custom-finished the framing elements to match the present aesthetic.
A solid partnership with Element Construction ensured no detail was overlooked. TSS installed multiple access control points that linked the showroom, administrative area, and lobby, as well as supplied ballistic fiberglass to Element Construction for the storefront walls. The project used Level 1 acrylic glazing and a Level 3 aluminum ballistic framing system. The final result is a peaceful setting, both in its physical space and the peace of mind knowing employees and patients are secure.
One bulletproof window or door does not instantly create a more secure facility. It takes a combination of the right products working together to achieve a solution that fits both security and aesthetic needs.
Since 2004, TSS has helped countless hospitals and healthcare clinics increase their bulletproof protection without compromising on budget or beauty. Our unique systems approach to security and experience with bulletproof products allow us to find a solution that works for virtually anyone.
