Protect Frontline Workers With Bulletproof Countertops

Bulletproof fiberglass is the most practical way to protect the "in-between" spaces of a ballistic barrier like countertops and walls. Bullet-resistant countertops are typically made with wood laminate, plastic laminate, or stainless steel and reinforced with ballistic fiberglass. The fiberglass is designed to delaminate when a bullet hits it, distorting and flattening the projectile and dissipating the energy.

Bulletproof fiberglass countertops are available in UL Levels 1 through 8. They are compatible with all TSS deal trays and package passers and can match existing interiors with custom finishes.

How Much Does A Bulletproof Countertop Cost?

The cost of most ballistic products increases as the level of protection increases. Bullet-resistant counters are no different.

The most reliable way to get an accurate estimate is to contact TSS for a free quote. Our experts can help you determine how much ballistic fiberglass your space may need and the appropriate level of protection.

How Do Bulletproof Counters Compare to Other Building Materials?

Most standard building materials are not bulletproof. If you're creating a physical security barrier, plasterboard, drywall, and wood framing will not stop a bullet. Cinderblocks do resist bullets, but they aren't a practical solution for countertops or reception areas.

The solution is bulletproof countertops. Stainless steel, wood, or plastic laminate counters are reinforced with a "hidden" layer of bulletproof fiberglass under the surface. If an attack occurs, frontline workers can duck under the counter and still be protected by bulletproof counters and walls. And because TSS can match the counter with your design preferences, this extra layer of protection is unobtrusive and blends right into the environment.

Choosing the Right Protection Level for Bulletproof Counters

Our ballistic fiberglass falls into two main categories.

  • Levels 1-3 are rated to stop a specified number of shots from common handguns
  • Levels 4-8 are rated to stop a specified number of shots from semi-automatic rifles and hunting rifles

The right level of protection depends on your environment and threat level. Since the majority of retail, financial, and healthcare gun violence happens with a handgun, Level 3 provides comprehensive protection at an accessible price point. But if you have specific concerns about rifle fire, a higher protection level might be a better choice. When in doubt, it's always better to consult a safety expert. Our team is ready to discuss your concerns and help you decide how to best protect your staff.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is bulletproof fiberglass transparent like bulletproof glass?

No. Bulletproof fiberglass is completely opaque, meaning it’s not suitable for applications where visibility or a clear line of sight is needed. It's ideal for reinforcing walls, counters, desks, and doors—anywhere you need discreet ballistic protection without the need for visibility.

Can fiberglass ballistic panels be added to existing buildings?

Yes, bullet-resistant fiberglass panels are an excellent choice for retrofits. Their lightweight, flat design allows them to be installed behind existing walls, counters, or millwork with minimal disruption. TSS specializes in custom fabrication, so we can match your existing finishes and integrate ballistic protection without altering the look or flow of your space.

How do bulletproof countertops work with teller windows or bandit barriers?

Bulletproof countertops and teller windows (also called bandit barriers) work together to create a layered security system that protects staff during a robbery or active threat. The teller window—made from clear ballistic glass—sits on the counter and includes features like voice ports, currency trays, or package passers for smooth transactions. Meanwhile, the bullet-resistant fiberglass countertop below offers critical protection if staff need to duck and cover, shielding them from gunfire.

Do government facilities use bulletproof countertops?

Yes, government and municipal buildings use bulletproof countertops as part of a custom ballistic barrier system designed to protect staff and the public. These counters are reinforced with bullet-resistant fiberglass and custom-milled to integrate seamlessly with the building’s existing architecture. When paired with bulletproof transaction windows, door hardware, and communication tools like window speakers, they help create an environment that supports safety and day-to-day operations.
