CHOOSING THE RIGHT
LEVEL OF PROTECTION:

Understanding UL protection level
ratings and how bullet-resistant
products are tested.

When evaluating which type of bullet-resistant barrier fits your needs, there are several factors to consider, including:
  • Type of system: arch, baffle, or secure sound.
  • Type of material: acrylic or polycarbonate.
  • Type of coating: uncoated or abrasion resistant coating intended to prevent scratching during general cleaning.
The most important factor, however, is the level of protection specified as UL Level I through UL Level VIII.

The various levels of protection have been established by the Underwriters Laboratory (UL), which is the primary testing organization for materials used in bullet resistant barriers. Most facilities, including banks, credit unions and convenience stores, are sufficiently protected using materials rated from UL Level I through UL Level III.

The protection level rating tool, found next to each product on the Total Security Solutions' website, enables you to quickly determine if a product fits your facilities required level of protection.

Testing a Bullet-Resistant Steel Door to meet UL standards. Our complete line of bullet-resistant products is tested according to UL standards by H.P. White Laboratory in Maryland. Prior to releasing a bullet-resistant product to the public, we ship a sample to H.P. White to be tested and approved. The testing process involves shooting the specified handguns, found in our Standard UL Protection Level Ratings chart, at the product sample to ensure the bullet does not exit the back side of the material. Areas typically known to be weakspots, such as around a door lock, are targeted heavily during testing to ensure they meet the same requirements for UL approved protection.

View our Standard UL Protection Level Ratings chart to determine the level of protection needed for your facility.

In an overview of second quarter bank crime statistics released by the FBI, it was reported that most bank robberies occurred between 9:00-11:00am on any given day, with Friday being the most popular day. Of the 1,304 reported robberies, burglaries and larcenies, at least 96% of the financial institutions involved had surveillance cameras or alarm systems activated, but only 7% had bullet-resistant barriers installed. For complete bank crime statistics, visit www.fbi.gov.
