According to the National Institute of Health, outpatient facilities and the emergency department are two of the most dangerous areas in a hospital. The same study found that 34.4% of healthcare workers experience some type of workplace violence.
Protecting healthcare workers, including those in the pharmacy, reception, and administrative teams, is more important than ever. Practical bulletproof barriers are one of the most important ways health systems can keep people safe.
The Healing Center of San Diego, a pain management facility, needed a bulletproof barrier system implemented in a short time frame. The design had to reflect a light, airy feel without sacrificing security, which posed quite a challenge because of the limited space. We worked with Element Construction to design and implement a system that achieved all of these goals.

When security is treated as an afterthought, design choices get made that conflict with sound security practices or the operational realities of a working healthcare facility. The result is expensive last-minute changes or properly specified equipment that never gets used because it creates friction. Early integration means every decision works in support of a cohesive hospital security strategy.
Although every hospital is unique, most departments share three core elements: a waiting area, a reception desk, and consultation or examination rooms behind closed doors. This consistent layout creates a natural opportunity to increase security by reinforcing the reception area with bullet-resistant glass and fiberglass and replacing existing doors with access-controlled bullet-resistant doors.
Most healthcare facilities are protected with bullet-resistant materials tested to UL 752 Level 1 through Level 3, which provide reliable protection against handgun threats. While it's not common for healthcare environments to require protection against high-powered rifles, some projects do call for Level 4 or higher, depending on the facility's specific threat assessment and desired level of ballistic protection.
Fiberglass panels are used in new construction and renovations. They're installed within stud walls before sheetrock, or built into millwork at reception counters, ER stations, and triage areas, where they're covered with a laminate or veneer to match surrounding finishes. They're also often applied below counters in help desks and security stations to protect kick spaces, giving staff a place to take cover if needed.
Not at all, and it shouldn't. Modern bullet-resistant doors and windows are fully customizable, allowing hospitals to choose finishes, frames, and glazing that blend seamlessly into the surrounding architecture. The goal is a space where patients, visitors, and staff feel safe and welcome.
TSS designs and installs bullet-resistant barrier systems across a wide range of industries, including government buildings, financial institutions, corporate offices, schools, and retail storefronts.
